Handing In Your Diary

My HND in Media Production at Belfast Met has a scriptwriting unit, which, you guessed it, requires me to submit an original script.

I made the decision to (and therefore brought it on myself…) write a script that is autobiographical and based on some pretty personal stuff.

So, why would anyone in their right mind do this? Well, I used to write music, and I’ve always found that my feelings about the world around me, and what was happening in it, were the most effective creative stimulus.

The best content (in song form) I’ve produced has always been centred around subject matter that most people try to keep close to their chest. The stories that are the most raw and honest are the ones that people respond and relate to the most.

Despite knowing all of this, that doesn’t make it any easier to write a treatment to hand in to your tutor or answer your classmates when they ask what your script’s about. It feels like you’re reading out your diary!

As awkward and embarrassing as it is, you just have to remember that the more honest you are, the more likely people are to relate and empathise. Everyone’s working through their own issues and odds are you won’t have to look too far to find someone that gets it.
