RTS Futures!!!
As I detailed in my Women in Film & TV post, I met Georgia Parkinson (Chair of the RTS Futures committee) and attended the first meeting a week later!
I was well impressed when I realised that it was being held in UTV’s office (when else would you ever get to say ‘So I had a meeting at UTV…’?!) However, after spotting no one else about 20 minutes after I arrived, I checked my messages from Georgia and realised that I was an hour too early, marking myself out as an absolute noob.
When we got into the meeting, I found out that they were in the final stages of planning their Careers Day event down at Queen’s University Belfast! They had 99% of the work done when I joined, so I was just an extra pair of hands at the finishing point.
Luckily I joined just in time for the allocation of roles on the actual day, Georgia was going to host ‘The BIG Event: TV and Film Panel Extravaganza,’ and when she asked who wanted to join her on stage asking their amazing panelists about their careers, I couldn’t stick my hand up fast enough.
So after really getting into sharing all of the RTS Futures promo posts on Facebook and Twitter, the big day finally rolled round! They had masterclasses and workshops running all day, and since The BIG Event didn’t start until 6pm, I spent the morning running around doing odd wee jobs (like picking up a pop-up poster in the Queen’s Film Theatre) and writing out name tag stickers in preparation for The Lightening Round event, as well as helping register people into that event, giving them their times and tables and explaining the system (worked out by the amazingly organised Louise Kealey and Sarah McKnight) to them.
I was also lucky enough to get to network with the professionals taking the lightening round once the event was over. Vikkie Taggart and Clare Blankley of Stellify Media! They were really lovely and full of advice, and I was really grateful that they took the time to speak to me even though the event was over. I was really excited for the Panel Extravaganza, I was buzzing to get to speak to the professionals and pick up all the advice and tips from them that I could! (as well as the fact that the drama-kid that still exists within me loves any chance to be on stage..) I really enjoyed getting to hear from Raymond Lau, Kieran Doherty, Chris Martin, Emma-Rosa Dias, Sinead Hughes and Paula Campbell! I was really impressed that the Futures Committee managed to organise a lineup of such successful, established people!
It was really nice to see Sarah McCaffrey again, we’d been in touch via email and Twitter in the buildup the event and it was reassuring to see a familiar and friendly face in the buildup to The Big Event, I was a little intimidated by the thought of trying to network with the professionals (both after The Lightening Round and The Panel Extravaganza) and I was really grateful that she gave me that extra push to put my big girl pants on and go get ‘em!
I was really happy to see 3 of my friends from my course at the Met there (shoutout to Michael, Ronan and Andrew!) and I really enjoyed being part of the whole day. I was unfortunately unable to join the rest of the RTS Committee members for the after-celebrations as I had to get home for an early night, I’ll explain what I was getting up to the next day in tomorrow’s blog post!
