I('d Rather Not) See Dead People
When you think of Halloween movies, does your mind immediately go to horror? Mine does too, but when I watch The Shining or The Woman in Black, it doesn’t give me a particularly spooky “Halloween-y” feel (because horror movies don’t ‘spook’ me, they scare me out of my wits!)
Whilst the club nights and house parties I enjoy now are brilliant, Halloween’s way better when you’re a kid about to go trick or treating. My friends and I would draw maps of the neighbouring houses and plan out strategies for how we were gonna get more sweets than any of the other kids. Now I prep for Halloween by searching “last minute costume ideas” on Pinterest, and the banter just isn’t quite the same.
As is the case with Christmas movies, the best Halloween movies are the ones that you watched as a kid. In the build up to the excitement of Halloween night, it wasn’t The Exorcist or Saw I was watching, it was The Nightmare Before Christmas and The Addams Family!
So now that I can (sort of) handle Nightmare on Elm Street and The Blair Witch Project, I just don’t associate them with this time of year. When I want to enjoy something seasonal to hype myself up for Halloween, it’ll be Hocus Pocus and Beetlejuice that’s on the TV in my house.
